Glutathione is an important antioxidant found in each cell of the human body. It is a tripeptide that can be generated and recycled endogenously or added exogenously. Its chemical makeup consists of cysteine, glutamic acid, and glycine residues and impacts a variety of cellular processes as well as general health.

Usually, Vitamins C and E come to mind before glutathione when we think of antioxidants which is a shame as we might be potentially missing out on its amazing health benefits. Glutathione, often referred to as the body's powerhouse, not only prevents and repairs cell damage caused by free radicals, but it also aids in detoxification and strengthens the immune system. Glutathione also appears to work in concert with other antioxidants to enhance their effectiveness when levels are adequate.

The good news is that glutathione is naturally produced by our bodies. The bad news, though? As we age the body naturally produces 20–40% less of it, which can be disastrous for our health.

Age-specific decreases in blood glutathione can be seen in all tissues including the liver, kidney, heart, spleen, and brain, increasing the risk of disease. For example, those with higher glutathione levels have been shown to experience one-third the risk of arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, and circulatory problems, among other diseases often associated with aging.

If you're still not sold on this antioxidant powerhouse, glutathione offers many head-to-toe benefits that reduce the risk of chronic disease and increase overall health.

Strengthens the immune system

From the common cold to more serious immune disorders, glutathione is a crucial player in the immune system. It is directly involved in the replication and growth of T-cell lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell that targets specific disease agents and coordinates a body-wide response.

Improves intellect and brain function

There may be more to your "foggy brain" than just stress, dietary inadequacies, or insufficient sleep. Lower levels of glutathione may contribute to the development of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease, whereas higher levels have been associated with enhanced mental clarity.

Enhances sleep

If your glutathione level is at its highest, you'll be more likely to get a better night's sleep and stay asleep all through the night.

Increases nutritional absorption

Your daily vitamin and mineral intake, whether it comes from food sources or supplements, is enhanced by glutathione.

Cleanses the cells and liver

The body's capacity to fight against the harmful effects of common pharmaceutical medications like acetaminophen, heavy metals like mercury, and environmental contaminants is reduced when glutathione levels are low. In contrast, normal levels of glutathione support the liver's ability to detoxify, support the repair of damaged liver cells, and maintain peak performance.

Reduces the risk of cancer

In its role as the primary antioxidant in the cell, glutathione not only strengthens the effects of other antioxidants like vitamin C, vitamin e, and selenium but also neutralizes the harmful effects of free radicals as soon as they develop in the cell. In addition to preventing DNA mutations, glutathione has the ability to repair damaged DNA and aid in the production of new DNA. It has been demonstrated that it functions as a detoxifier and can remove or neutralize a variety of environmental carcinogens.

Helps to lessen joint and muscular discomfort

Keeping glutathione levels at their ideal range will help lessen the common muscle and joint aches brought on by aging and degenerative diseases.
