Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a fatty acid which has been shown in laboratory studies to support insulin function and lean body mass (both muscle and bone). CLA is needed to maintain optimal function of phospholipid cell membranes. Healthy membranes allow fat, protein and carbohydrate to flow into active cells such as muscle, connective tissues and organs instead of being stored passively in fat cells. When a deficiency of CLA inhibits fat from entering muscle cells, excessive accumulation of body fat can result.*
